Upstairs Landing Reveal + Vintage Cabinet Makeover

At Home· DIY· Home Decor· Projects· Renovations

Hello lovelies!  I’m super excited to be sharing my upstairs landing reveal with you today.  It’s been a long time coming, but the finished space is surprisingly beautiful, simply and unique.

If you recall, back in April I shared with you that we finished installing and finishing the oak floors on the second floor landing. At that time, I took advantage of the space being cleared out to add the same beautiful diamond stencil pattern I used in the laundry room, on the large blank wall.  Unlike the laundry room wall which is more subtle, I purposely wanted a more dramatic look, but I love that the pattern is repeated elsewhere in the house even thought they are a little different.

B really wanted to use my old china cabinet in this space, but it was painted white and after years of use and abuse, it was looking pretty rough. It was purchased at a local antique mall already painted and the seller didn’t do a good job painting it properly in the first place.

I originally wanted to strip it down to bare wood and go with a lighter look but as I stripped off the paint and underlying finish, I realized the wood wasn’t in good shape or the prettiest (some of it was veneer).

My alternative plan was to go with a moody black paint and add a pop of color and pattern inside.  You can read more about my plan for the cabinet here.

I finally made time to get this cabinet finished and was anxious to get it into the space and see how it would all go together.  I am in love with how the cabinet turned out.  I used a black milk paint which has a very matte finish similar to chalk paint.  It’s really pretty and I love how the brass pulls on the drawer contrast with the black.

We don’t have an actual linen closet (hello old houses) so the plan was to store some extra linens and bathroom supplies here. I did my best to make the contents look tidy while serving its function.  To add some height I added some decor to the top of the cabinet with a mix of textures.

The landing isn’t large so to keep it from looking cluttered, I’m not sure I’ll add much of anything else.  This is a high traffic area in our house so simple but functional is key.

Our upstairs landing is finally finished so the next step in the flooring progress is the storage room for the studio.
