I love this time of year when one year ends and a new begins. I just love new beginnings and the anticipation of things to come. I’ve never been really good at setting realistic goals that can be tracked, but I’ve been learning with my business that it’s an absolute necessity to keep a business or a blog on the right track for success.
Twig and White is nearing it’s first birthday and when I look back over this first year, I’m disappointed in myself that so much time was wasted or used for other things that not really much has changed. The same is really true for my business. This past year has been more like treading water instead of pushing ahead. While I feel that at some point I will step away, I’m not in a place yet that I can do that so setting attainable goals that I can track for myself is a must.
In thinking about 2018, the biggest thing that has been going through my mind is that I want to find consistency here. It was my challenge from the start and I need to find a way to keep things going.
General Goals for 2018
Improve Content and Clarify Topics
I plan on restarting the EBA in late January / early February. Now that I have nearly a year under my belt here at Twig & White, I feel like I can work through the class with better focus. If I’m being honest, last year when I started, I expected it would help me decide whether to end RC and go full time here or the other way around. What I learned wasn’t which one to quit but that I was looking to answer the wrong questions. Because my topics have been so broad, I am realizing that I need to narrow it down.
Improve Social Media
My social media efforts have been nearly nonexistent and whether I like it or not, social media is a must with any blog or business. While I have no expectation that I’ll be posting multiple times a day, I really want to work toward a consistent schedule that I’m comfortable with even if it’s only a couple times a week.
Create Products / Services to Sell
I am beginning to get some solid ideas on some new products and while they maybe aren’t what I thought I’d be considering, I’m feeling confident my ideas are at least a great place to start. I started a shop last year but never went any further so this year I’d really like to officially start the shop and get some projects under my belt moving into next year with potentially even bigger ideas.
Take time for myself
Maybe more of a personal goal for 2018 but I think it’s important. I’m looking into joining a bible study at church or taking some stress and wellness classes through the local hospital. The idea is to find some things that get me out of the house and shop even if just for a couple hours a week to provide me with a diversion from living and breathing home and business 24/7.
Photography is one area that I know would drastically help both the blog and my business. I took a photography class and have done paid photography gigs so I’m not a total novice, I just never take the time required to really get good pictures. This year I’d like to not only make more time for photography for the blog and my business but also really work at improving my photography skills.
Organize and Declutter
Like physical fitness, organizing and decluttering are huge this time of year. I really need to put an effort both at home and in the shop and my life in general to get rid of the excess and focus only on the important stuff. I’m talking physical and emotional. I don’t have all the plans yet but my goal is to work at this throughout the year.
Behind the scenes I have my goals for the year broken out into quarters and months to make the big goals seem more attainable and less overwhelming.
Take Some Big Steps Forward
I’ve been feeling pretty strongly that I’m at a crossroads with my career and while last year was my self-titled year of change, I really feel like this is my year to take action. I’m in the process of making some big decisions so once these things are settled, I’ll share more but I’m really excited about what’s in store!
I’ve got some big goals to tackle this year. I’m only sharing the big picture with you here but I promise it’s going to be a big year. I hope your year is just as big!
Here’s to a great 2018!
