Transitional Wall Sconces for the Coastal Cottage Bedroom

At Home· Bedroom· DIY· Projects

Earlier this week I shared with you the overall design plan for the first floor bedroom at the coastal cottage.  This tiny room is ready for paint and built-ins and with the ceiling fan already here and ready to install, I knew I needed to finalize my choice for the wall sconces above the bed.

Because the bed in this room will be built-in flanked on either side with built-in closets for storage, I decided the best option to provide lighting near the bed would be to install two wall sconces just above the shelf headboard we are building custom for the space.

I’ve been all over the place on lighting though.  On one hand, I love the idea of a rotating arm style option so the lighting can be adjusted.  On the flip side, I also don’t want a light fixture that feels too bulky or that has too much going on in such a small space.  I don’t want an arm to always feel like it’s in the way so a more simplified design seems better.

Either way, I’m leaning toward something that is more transitional in style.  Nothing too modern, nothing too formal or ornate but still interesting and beautiful.

I’m still completely undecided so today I’m sharing with you my favorites in the hopes that you might have some input on the final design choice.

I’m leaning toward something gold / brass.  The room is white with light gray trim and an accent wall in a blue-gray.  The floors will be southern heart pine but other than the floors, the only warm tone will be the headboard / shelf.  I’m thinking brass will bring in a bit more warmth.  The more I look, the more I love the fixtures with the combination of brass and white.  The ceiling fan is all white so I love that it could help tie everything together.

I'm so glad I did because it looks lovely and keeps my home from feeling bland and empty now the that holiday decorations are all put away.

Our refinished janitors sink is the perfect addition to our laundry room. The new faucet has a vintage feel that goes perfectly with the sink and even thought the penny time was a last minute add-on, I'm so glad we did it because it adds color the space and lets the vintage sink pop!

My philosophy with home decor and design has alway My philosophy with home decor and design has always been "if you can't find it or afford it then build / make it". That's what we did with this little "drop zone" shelf in our mudroom area. Instead of adding clutter to the pantry counter or worse, the kitchen, B and I created this metal and natural oak shelf that is suspended from the bottom of the upper cabinet.

This gives B a place to drop his wallet, receipts and phone without cluttering the counters. The best part is it cost us about $25 because the oak was left over from the other shelves and B welded the brackets himself from steel from the hardware store. It looks super custom and expensive and it was so inexpensive!
