Spring Decor in the Family Room

30 Mar

Hello friends.  Spring is in full swing around here and we’re loving it!  From the roller coaster weather to the longer days and slowly warming temperatures, it’s looking and feeling more like spring every day so I knew it was time to finish up my spring decorating.  The coffee table set the tone for the rest of the decor so today I’m excited to show you my simple spring decor in the family room.

Spring Mantle Decor

I mentioned when I shared the details of my spring coffee table decor that I’ve been really drawn to shades of green this spring.  Accented with lots of white and touches of yellow and natural elements like wood finishes, I can’t seem to get enough of layering shades of green.

On the mantel, I kept things pretty simple so I don’t have too much competition for attention in one room.  My mantle tends to be a tricky spot for me because our ceilings are so high.  While this normally is a blessing, too often decor on the mantle looks too small because of the ceiling height.  That’s why this beautiful gold mirror hangs out there almost all year round.

For the rest of the decor I follow a super simple three-step process that I think you’ll find useful too.

My Simple 3-Step Guide for Decorating your Mantel

Step 1:  Start with your Anchor Piece.  Your anchor piece is the central focal point for your mantle display.  For my simple spring mantel, the mirror is my anchor or primary focal piece.

Step 2:  Balance with Weight:  The second step is to add balance on either side of your anchor piece with some weight.  Your display doesn’t have to be symmetrical but it should feel balanced weight wise.

Step 3:  Fill In.  with your anchor piece in place and the weight balanced on either side, the last thing to do is fill in the space with additional pieces that bring the whole display together.

Spring Sofa Decor

If there is one thing that can refresh your family room each season it’s your sofa.  Your sofa is most likely one of the largest elements in your family room so it is a natural focal piece.  Changing out pillows and throw blankets is a super simple and inexpensive way to give your family room a refresh any time of year.

I swapped out the original sofa pillow covers that came with the sofa with covers in different shades and patterns of green.  The solid ones are inexpensive pillow covers from Amazon and I love the texture of these because they are so soft and give the sofa a great base.

The darker pillows and the “home” pillow are all from Kirkland’s and are new additions to my decor this spring.  I think they will work perfectly throughout the year so I’m excited to play around with these more as the decor changes.

The lighter pillows are DIY pillow covers I made from an inexpensive shower curtain.  I absolutely love them and in just about 30 minutes I had two lovely new pillows to layer on the sofa.  Along with the super soft light green throw, I think this is my prettiest sofa to date!

With the dogs, the tall vases can’t live on the coffee table all the time so I’ve been experimenting with the dresser on the front wall too.  Mixed with one of my lanterns, I think this is a favorite look!
