Smartwatches are extremely popular and it always amazes me how much technology is packed into a watch. The downside is that many are very large and not the most attractive when you want to be a little more dressed up.
I have had a Fitbit for years. Most recently an Alta, one of the original models in the special edition gold color. I really liked it because it was on the smaller side and did everything I wanted it to (track sleep, activity, steps, kept time, etc.)
I could tell the band was getting stretched and sadly I didn’t replace it in time and lost it during a play-date with my niece and nephew several weeks ago. Being without a watch has been hard enough but more than anything, I really miss having the ability to track my sleep and activity so I started looking for a replacement watch /fitness tracker.
I’ve always been happy with my fitbit but in doing research I realized that there are many brands that offer the same technology at various price points.
The one thing I didn’t love about the Fitbit Alta was the size of the display so I was open to a smartwatch but I wasn’t really thrilled about getting text messages, storing music, etc. on my watch. I want something simple.
Then I found the Fossil Hybrid watches. I loved that they look like a real watch so no one would ever know that I’m wearing a smartwatch. It’s not chunky on my wrist like many smartwatches are.
Just like with other smartwatches and fitness trackers, prices vary widely, but I found one for under $100 and I’ve been wearing it now for a little over a week and here is what I have found.
The leather band has darkened from the original slightly metallic, rose gold color. It doesn’t look bad but I was surprised at how after just a few days of wear, the band was already changing.
When first getting it set up, the instruction book directed me to download a fossil app to my phone but after installing it and it not working, I figured out that I actually needed a different app. That was a little frustrating but it didn’t take long to get things straightened out.
Within minutes of setting up the app, I had the time set, my account set up and I was fully up and running. While there are features to set up controlling my phone’s camera, music, and phone / text notifications, I really was interested in tracking my steps, sleep and goals. I don’t really need it to tell me when I have received a text or phone call and I’m not sure that I would use the camera option for anything.
The one major downside that I see is the battery life. Unlike smartwatches for my old Fitbit, these watches aren’t rechargeable. After just a week, my watch has gone from 99% battery life to 52%! The battery is a common watch battery that can easily be purchased at Target or a drug store but I am not thrilled about having to replace the battery every few weeks. I will be anxious to see how long the battery lasts when I put a fresh one in. I don’t know how long the battery has been in it to start.
You can find a few other great options here:
Overall, I’m thrilled with the watch for the price. For under $100 I have not only a watch that looks great on, but a smartwatch that tracks my sleep and steps. If you are looking for a simple, easy-to-use smartwatch that doesn’t look like one, I suggest checking out Fossil’s Hybrid Watches for yourself.
