Reworking the Garden and What Else We Have Planned

At Home· DIY· Garden & Outdoor· Projects

13 Jul

Planting a garden when you have a tiny yard isn’t impossible but it does take some planning.  Depending on the space you have to work with, planting in containers or building designated garden boxes may be your best bet for keeping things organized and under control.

That’s the experience we had had with our own small backyard and after removing the larger garden last year, we knew that a smaller garden done with planter boxes would work better for us.  You can read about our yard projects that started last year here.

We never ended up planting a garden last year.  I guess with the new pond and putting in the walkway and patio, we didn’t have time to plant and tend to a garden, even a small one.

How We Reworked the Garden

This year with spending more time at home, B and I decided to relocate the garden to the back corner, build planter boxes to keep the garden contained and then to keep the dogs out, we put up a wooden picket fence.

Because we left our barrier fence natural, we decided to keep the picket fence natural too but the more I look at the fence,I feel like it should be painted white.  What do you think?

Obviously I love white fences based on the small yard gardens I shared recently.

We have three planter boxes and the large metal trough that we also planted in.  My raspberries run along the right side of the garden and this time of year they get quite out of control.

We started with building three planter boxes and then we added the metal trough and my little garden shed.

The boxes are great.  They are easy to get around to tend and they do keep things somewhat under control.

What We Still have to do to the Garden

The garden is fully usable as it is but we still have a few things we’d like to do starting with an actual gate to get in and out.

We’d also like to remove the grass from around the planter boxes and put in more river stone like we did around the walkway to the gate (above) and around the patio. We also have some additional stepping stones like the walkway that’s we would like to put in. I can see adding some smaller planters in the open area inside the gate next year too.

Our dirt pile is getting smaller finally so we’d like to eventually clear that out and possibly put another planter box along the fence next year  for a little added planting area.

I’d like to put a stone pad at the door of my little garden shed and add a little decor to dress it up.  The only area we don’t really have a plan for is the nook in the far back corner of the garden.

With our small yard, it makes sense that our garden is also small and with the addition of the wooden fence, it’s a bit more contained and clean looking while also keeping the dogs out.  Even though there isn’t a lot to do yet, the remaining tasks will go a long way toward given the garden an even better look.
