Organize This: A Few Simple Tips to Organize Under your Bathroom Sink

At Home· Bathroom· Cleaning & Organizing

27 Apr

The limited space under your bathroom sink is premium space that can easily become cluttered and unorganized.  When you have limited storage space in your bathroom, making every inch count is key to keeping your bathroom functional and beautiful so by following a few simple tips, you can easily take that messy bathroom vanity and turn it into an organized and cluttered free space so you always can find what you need.

organizing under bathroom sink

Earlier this year, when I took on our powder room makeover, I emptied out our bathroom vanity and only just recently loaded it back up.  I knew that when I put items back into the vanity, I wanted it to be more organized rather than the cluttered mess that it was before.

This is just a powder room that I use during the day so aside from a few personal items and cleaning products, this room doesn’t require a lot of storage.

I set out to find something simple and inexpensive to help me keep the smaller items that needed stored more contained. What I found was this simple, two-tiered basket that slides out like drawers.  It fits perfectly on one half of the vanity cabinet and is perfect for keeping all the smaller items that need stored in here.

Now how did I simplify my overstuffed, unorganized and cluttered cabinet?

My Simple Tips for organizing your bathroom vanity cabinet

Start by emptying everything out of your cabinet.

Empty it all out onto a table or counter when you can easily see everything.  Then one item at a time, sort through it,tossing old or out-of-date items.  If your bathroom is anything like mine, you’ll likely be surprised at how much things seem to multiply and just how much you find that doesn’t even belong under your sink!

Clean and Line your Cabinet (Optional)

With everything cleaned out and sorted, head back to your cabinet and give it a good, thorough cleaning.  Then, if you want, use a cabinet liner to cover the bottom of your cabinet.  I like this one:  https://amzn.to/2RR7KZV

Why a liner?  Liners aren’t necessary and you see I didn’t add one to this vanity cabinet, but they are a great idea because they can protect your cabinets from moisture and damage from open bottles or containers that spill or drop.  They also create a non-slip surface which helps keep things in place better.

Take some quick measurements inside your cabinet.

You may have measured your cabinet already for the liner mentioned above but, if not, it’s a good idea to take a few quick measurements of the inside of your cabinet.  Side-to-side, front-to-back, space on either side of pipes and the door opening.  Door openings are smaller than the overall cabinet door so it’s a good idea to have this measurement so you are sure any organizing containers you add will fit.

Add Storage Containers and Accessories

The one thing that will help keep your sink cabinet organized and clutter-free is keeping everything in containers.  This not only allows you to easily access items you need, it will keep all your products and cleaners looking tidy.

two tier basket organizer for under bathroom sink

One of the best things I added was the two-tier basket bin mentioned above.  This allowed me to take advantage of the vertical space inside my small cabinet. (Find it here.)  This organizer includes two dividers for the bins which allows you to section off areas for even better organization.  For my cabinet, this is a perfect fit on one side.

dedicated cleaning basket

One the other side of the drain pipes, I went with some plastic baskets.  I love the solid ones. They are perfect for keeping things like cleaning products. When I’m cleaning, I can easily pull out that basket and everything I need is right there. Find them here.

Go Vertical and Don’t Forget the Door

I’m working in our powder room so I don’t need storage for makeup, hair products, styling tools, etc.  If you do, then don’t forget to take advantage of every inch of storage space by seeking out the right storage products.  Hunt multi-tiered storage drawers that will fit inside your cabinet (similar to my two-tiered organizer) and take advantage of the inside of your cabinet doors.  This simple one holds it all.

Why take the time to carefully organize your Bathroom Sink Cabinet?

If you are wondering why it really matters or what benefits there are to putting time, money and effort into organizing your bathroom cabinet, here are just a couple…

For starters, having the items under your sink clean, organized and contained means you will have more room and less clutter on your counter because everything has a home and is easily accessible inside of your cabinets.

If that’s not enough, when you need something that is inside of your cabinet, you wont need to rifle through everything in search of that item.  You’ll know right where it is because you can see everything you have which saves you time and a lot of frustration!
