Trends come and go all the time. From the latest diet craze, foods, clothing and home décor. It is a cycle that never ends. Here’s 4 reasons you should stop chasing down all the latest trends and instead uncover what you love for a beautiful and happy home.
Last year I shared how we’d been in a construction phase for so long, I lost touch with our style. I felt like I was following popular trends to please others or to fit in rather than really focus in on what B and I love. The result was a mishmash of things that never quite came together. I went through a bit of an identity crisis during this time all brought about by the designing of the beach house. The good thing was that once I took a few steps back and started looking at the things in our home that made the most sense and made us the happiest, I began to see the direction we needed to go.
The mistake I’d fallen into was following the popular trends rather than staying true to us. We all get sucked in. We are trained to love all the trends and want to take part in all of it. It’s part of our culture and it’s so easy to follow along and not even realize it. I think this contributes to so many of us struggling with what our style actually is.
So, let’s first take a look at four big reasons to stop following all the trends and then I’ll share a few tips for what to do instead.
Four Reasons to Stop Following Trends
Following all the trends is a big waste of time and money.
Remember how I started this post? Trends are constantly coming and going. It’s a cycle that never ends, so if you are always following the latest trends, you are buying all the latest only to find it out of style the next season, or the next year.
Following all the latest trends is also a big waste of time because you are always looking to what’s in and what’s out. It’s just not worth it because you are never truly settled.
Think of it like this. Trends look dated in a short amount of time. Constantly following all the latest trends is expensive and not really worth the cost because they look dated so quickly and that makes it very wasteful.
Following all the trends means you never truly develop your own personal style.
When you do nothing but look to the latest design trends and then buy into all of them, you are just creating spaces that someone else said looks good rather than truly establishing your own unique style. You never really get a chance to define your own likes and dislike or finding things that truly represent your family or your lifestyle. You are creating a space that looks more commercial and less personal which can lead to continuing the cycle because you never feel like things are just right.
Following all the trends means you are prohibiting your home from having its own unique look.
Some people may look at home décor as a frivolous thing but I firmly believe that creating a happy and beautiful space at home is the foundation for so many successes in life. Home is your refuge and should make you happy and inspire you to conquer the world. When it doesn’t represent you, how you live or your personality then it can’t do all those things for you.
Following all the trends means you never end a viscous cycle.
I touched on this already, but when all you do is follow the latest trends, you are constantly redecorating because what was “in” 6 months ago is totally out now. It’s a never ending cycle because trends are constantly changing. That just sounds exhausting (and expensive)!
So now that I’ve made trends sound like the enemy (they aren’t), let’s take a look at some things to do instead.
Tips for Avoiding Constantly Chasing Trends
Experiment with trends in small ways.
Trends aren’t the enemy. I actually believe that trends are a great way for exposing the general population to styles that they may not have known about or push people to try new things.
To do this, concentrate on classic lines and neutral colors for your large investment pieces including furniture. Then bring in the latest trends through accessories because they are easy to swap out and cost way less money than large pieces.
Use trends as a way to really evaluate what you really love and want in your home.
As I said above, if you don’t really know much about all the different design styles, looking at current trends may be a way to start evaluating what styles you really love and want to live with for a long time.
The truth is, if you really, truly love something; it’s always in style!
Trends can be a great way to expose yourself and to learn about new styles that you weren’t already familiar with, trying to follow every one can also take up a lot of time and money and leave your home feeling like it’s never done or completley pulled together. If you love all the latest trends, then find small ways to take part in your favorites but no matter what, always stay true to what you truly love. When you really love something, it’s always in style!
Is there a trend that you really love that isn’t maybe in style as much as it once was? I’d love to hear about it!
