Summer is nearly here and after a few weekends away, B and I finally spent some time working in our yard this past weekend getting our outdoor spaces ready for summer. Aside from prepping the yard, I spent some time adding a little personality to the small section of our deck at our back kitchen door so today I thought I’d share a few of the simple things that I did that you can do too to add a little color and style to your outdoor space.

Add An Outdoor Rug
Nothing anchors and defines a space like a bold rug. We bought ours while we were in Charlotte back in April at At Home for $9.99! The key with an outdoor rug is to find the right option for your space. Our space is uncovered so a woven plastic rug worked best for us. We didn’t want something that would remain wet after a rain. That’s less of an issue if your space is covered.
Add Seating
Consider the size of your space and add furniture that is the right scale for your space. Seating will draw you in and make you want to stay a while.
Another score from our trip to Charlotte are these adorable green chairs. They were sitting by the exit door on clearance for $25. Not only did we love the color but we loved that they are on the smaller side which is perfect for this section of our deck. The price was great too!
Spruce Up Bland Furniture with New Cushions or Pillows
The green chairs are great on their own but B and I really wanted to more of a pop so we found our colorful floral seat cushions that add just a little more color. Don’t be afraid to let your personality show through your cushions and pillows. These are much easier to change out year after year compared to replacing expensive furniture.
Accent Furniture Does Double Duty
Our pretty white side tables are actually stools so when it’s just us, we can use them as tables but if we have company we can pull them out for extra seating. We found ours on clearance at our local Sears store that was closing.
Add Plants for Added Color and Texture
Finish off your space with potted plants. On our side table I’ve placed a citronella plant to help keep the bugs away but up high I’ve planted colorful annuals in some sleek, modern planters to bring color up high and to help break up our bland outside wall.
