Beach House Progress Update

At Home· Projects· Renovations

27 Jan

Hello friends! It’s been a while since I’ve done an update of any kind on the beach house so that’s what brings me here today. We took some time off over Christmas – a much needed reboot for all of us I think. Even with the short break, things are moving along and we are so close to finishing the first floor! So, here we go with our beach house progress update.

Beach House Progress – First Floor Bedroom

I can’t yet call this space finished, but we are officially down to the last few things in this space. The bed is built and our mattress is moved in. The trim has been installed along with the crown around the ceiling.

Most of what’s left in this space relates to the closets and then accessories. Here’s what’s left:

  • Paint and hang closet doors
  • add rods in closets for hanging clothes and build shelves at the bottom
  • New bedding (this will happen a little later)
  • Accessories and décor
  • new curtains

Beach House Progress – Hallway

The hallway is officially finished. I’ll do an official reveal soon with all the paint and design details but for now I’m just excited to check this task off the list. Part of me feels a little silly that we put so much energy into the hallway but I’m so glad we did. It’s beautiful and because it’s right off the kitchen, you can see it from just about everywhere on the first floor. Proof that you should never overlook the design opportunities that a hallway can provide.

We may add some art to the wall where the bedroom door is but that’s not a priority. I’m also considering adding a neutral rug right at the door to help catch sand and dirt when coming in from the back yard.

Beach House Progress – Bathroom

I did the main bathroom reveal last year but did point out at that time that we were still missing the crown molding around the ceiling. B finished that a couple of weeks ago so this space is 100% finished! Yeah!

Beach House Progress – Laundry Closet

The laundry closet wasn’t really designed to be a “pretty space”. IT houses the main plumbing lines and will pretty much be just big enough to house our stackable washer and dryer. I used leftover paint from the bedroom feature wall to add some color to the walls so we are really just down to putting the washer / dryer in place and putting on the closet doors.

Here’s the list for the laundry closet:

  • paint closet doors
  • install closet doors
  • install washer and dryer
  • add simple light fixture
  • touch up paint and add rug out outside the doors

Beach House Progress – Kitchen

I’ve been trying to avoid sharing too much about the kitchen until it’s done but it’s actually nearly complete at this point and worth mentioning now. It went from 0 to about 95% so quickly and then kind of stalled while we worked on other projects in the house.

Here’s a list of everything I can think of that still needs to be finished here:

  • touch up trim paint around window
  • add cabinet hardware
  • install hood vent
  • trim around opening to family room
  • hang pendant lights over peninsula
  • add sconce to left of oven range

Beach House Progress – Dining Room

The area opposite the kitchen is our dining area. It’s a simple space and there isn’t much of anything left to do here mostly because there is not much here anyway. Here’s the list:

  • add trim around top of cabinet
  • touch up trim around window
  • add new window covering
  • add rug
  • Add doors / covering to upper part of cabinet
  • decide what to do with the countertop

Beach House Progress – Living Area

The main living area is pretty much done minus the stairs. The area at the base of the stairs is where B keeps all his tools so it’s always messy looking which is why I haven’t done a complete room reveal in this space.

Here’s what still left on the list:

  • stairway railing
  • finish storage area under stairs
  • refinish stairs
  • add wood trim to opening to Kitchen
  • New sofa

Beach House Progress – Front Porch and Back Yard

We’d originally planned to finish the front porch this past fall but then had to push it back till this spring. We have done the inspection and have the plan for what needs repaired / rebuilt so it really comes down to the weather cooperating so we can get it done.

In the back yard, we’d also hoped to get the small deck / platform built outside the back door along with the walkway / boardwalk to the future outdoor shower. That didn’t happen either but this should easily get done this spring and summer.

What we did get done in the back yard is the shed. Officially it’s not finished, but with the help of B’s parents for extra hands, we were able to get the main structure up, sided and the metal roof put on. We now have a place to keep our lawnmower and other stuff. The large overhand will eventually be a screened in bar area with a ceiling fan and lights. It’s buggy here in the summer so a screened in room that allows us to still enjoy the outdoors is a must.

Beach House Progress – Landscaping

beach house landscaping

We didn’t do much of anything in terms of landscaping this year with all the work going on inside. We did plant a hydrangea that hopefully will fill in a little bit this summer to add some color to our very bland yard. I’d also like to plant some grasses to give us a little screen from the neighbors and add some flowers or something to soften up the front yard. I don’t have a solid plan yet so I’ll share more details as things progress.

Beach House Progress – Second Floor

The second floor is phase 2 of the project so we haven’t done much work up there to this point. The only real change to date is the heat pump which was installed in November. This will be walled into a closet area at the top of the steps.

We’ve also done the floor plan for upstairs which will consist of our master bedroom suite. The main area will be our bedroom and then we’ll do a small 3/4 bath in the back corner with a closet and “attic” storage in the front and back of the house where the roofline is too low.

So, that’s where we are with the beach house progress. It’s come a long way yet feels like it’s taking forever at the same time. I do love that we are finally checking rooms off the list and can finally start enjoying it!
