Kitchens are not always the easiest rooms to update. Unless you plan to tackle a large renovation that can cost a lot of money and time, it’s not always easy to find ways to make it feel fresh and updated. Painting cabinets isn’t easy and swapping out hardware can also be pricey and not make a big enough change if you are looking for a more dramatic refresh. That’s where adding a runner can make a big impact and today I’ve rounded up some of my favorite affordable runners for your kitchen.

Putting a runner in your kitchen may not seem like the most obvious of design choices but it’s actually a really great way to add depth with color and texture. It can even add some coziness that kitchens often lack because of all the hard surfaces.
If your kitchen doesn’t lend itself to a runner, a rug can also do the same thing. The point here is that a rug is a more unexpected touch that can add real personality to a kitchen.

We’ve had this small rug in our kitchen for about a year. I love the design and the colors fit so well with our kitchen but it’s small and after multiple washes, the edges have curled up and it’s hard to get them to lay falt now.
I’ve been thinking that a runner between our island and the wall cabinets will not only add a punch of color (something our kitchen lacks) but also make it appear bigger (longer).
And before we get into some great options, I want to answer one question I’m guessing you are asking. Rugs may not seem practical for a kitchen but that doesn’t have to be so.
Kitchens are generally high traffic areas and obviously the floors receive a lot of spills and crumbs so opt for fabrics that are washable and durable. My favorite option for kitchens is actual going with an indoor / outdoor rug.
Now, here are some of my favorite affordable runners for the kitchen.
Affordable Runners for a Traditional Farmhouse Kitchen

Blue Striped Runner | Gray Braided Runner | Black and White Gingham Runner | Red Persian Runner | Oatmeal Braided Runner with Fringe | Blue and Orange Runner
Whether you prefer something simple and neutral like the braided options or want something to make a statement like the persian inspired rugs (the ones I’m leaning toward) a runner (or rug) could be a great way to add just enough personality to your kitchen without spending a lot of money.
I hope you found this inspiring and if you have other easy ways to refresh your kitchen without a lot of time and money, leave a comment below.
