How are you at packing for a trip? Are you an over packer? Are you a seasoned pro that knows all the tips and tricks when it comes to packing? I am an eternal over packer but am trying to do better. So, this post is as much for me as it is for those of you out there that struggle with over packing too or not knowing what to pack too.
B and I will be headed out on a long weekend road trip soon. We are driving from Central PA to Charlotte, NC. I want to pack smart and not lug more than I have to so we aren’t crowded in the car. So how do you determine what to pack? Well, I am starting by answering a few questions. These questions apply to any kind of travel so whether you are headed out on a road trip or taking a flight to a far-away destination these questions will help you pack smart without going overboard.
Where are you traveling to?
Sometimes just thinking about where you are headed, can help clue you in as to the items you may need to pack. Are you headed to a beach resort? Take airy sundresses, shorts, flip flops and bathing suits.
As I’ve said, we are taking a long road trip to Charlotte, NC with stops in VA on the way down and back. We’ve never been to any of the places we are headed so we don’t have any ideas of what to expect.
What types of things will we you be doing on the trip?
It’s important to take note of anything specifically that you will be doing on your trip? Are you traveling for a specific event like a wedding or work event? Are you traveling purely for adventure and don’t have any agenda? It’s important to know this to give you a general idea of the types of things you need to pack.
B and I are headed to Charlotte to do the Nascar tourist stuff. We’ll also enjoy exploring Charlotte, trying some new restaurants, etc. We don’t have anything super fancy planned so I don’t need anything too formal.
What will the Weather Be Like?
It’s important to consider both the general climate and the actual weather forecast for the time you’ll be traveling. is it calling for rain? Is it warm during the day but cool at night? Is it going to be sunny and hot the whole time?
Knowing we are heading that far south, we both expect the weather to be much warmer than it is here in Central PA. I’ve been watching the weather for a few days now to have an idea of what to expect. It’s going to be mid to upper 70s during the day but 50s at night so I’m planning outfits with a jacket to keep me warm in the morning and evening.
Packing for any trip can be difficult if you aren’t experienced at it. It is easy to want to pack too many things or simply have no idea what to pack. If you stop and ask yourself a few questions before you start packing, it will help you narrow down your choices and pack the right things for your trip.
